Our (B)lues

Starring: Kim Woo-bin, Han Ji-min, Lee Byung-hun, Shin Min-a

Life is both sweet and bitter, that is what one learns from Our Blues. No one’s life is perfect, but it can go satisfactorily.

In the bustling island of Jeju, a host of people, whose lives are interconnected, battle every day hardships, sorrow, heartbreaks and small successes too. There are multiple stories depicting different situations of life– from ego and misunderstanding in family and friendships, teenage pregnancy, single parenting and financial struggles.

A young mother who loses custody of her child due to postpartum depression, a helpless father deep in debt trying to con her friend who at some point in time had a massive crush on him and is still carrying some lingering feelings from the past, two young schoolmates fall pregnant while exploring sex for the first time and how their families deal with the situation, a son who never received love from her mother and hence is resentful towards her, and a ship captain who falls in love with a bubbly sea diver (Hanyeo).

What attracted me first to the show was the ensemble of Korean drama A-listers, however once I started watching it, I sunk deep into their beautiful, somewhat hauntingly sad stories.

Don’t miss this show for Jeju’s breathtaking cinematography that has put visiting Jeju on my Korean itinerary.

Other show starting with B worth watching is – Behind Every Star based on the French TV series Call My Agent! It’s a show on how in a major celebrity management company, agents work round the clock, often sacrificing their personal life, to keep their celebrity clients happy.
